Spirited Movement

Retreats for People Living with Chronic Illness and their Caregivers

Every week, we will feature a new prayer here at Spirited Movement.
Some will be original, while others will be gathered from diverse sources.
We hope they will all bring peace and joy into your life.

We encourage you to share prayers that you enjoy on this discussion forum
or take a few moments to reflect on what the posted prayers and sayings mean to you.

Pilgrim, pilgrim, pilgrim,

There is no way, there is no way,

there is no way.

You make the way,

you make the way,

you make the way

by walking, walking, walking.

                     -- Ancient Peruvian Saying

Show Me

Dear God, I cannot change what is,
but if you lead me,
that will be enough.
If you show me,
that will be enough.
If you love me,
that will be enough
for peace.
Amen

My Medicine

When the wind blows
that is my medicine
When it rains
that is my medicine
When it hails
that is my medicine
When it becomes clear after a storm
that is my medicine

An Irish Blessing

May there always be work for you hands to do
May your purse always hold a coin or two
May the sun always shine upon your window pane
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain
May the hand of a friend always be near to you and
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

A Prayer at Thanksgiving

Dearest God,
I come to you today
to thank you simply for what is,
not to ask you to make things different for me.
I am grateful for the journey I am on
although it is often painful and exhausting
because I know you are traveling with me
guiding me along the road that will lead me home
to a place of healing and peace.

God, your devotion and care amaze me.
You inspire me to give love to others
who suffer in mind, body or spirit.
Let me walk with those around me in your name, dear God,
so they may see "thanks" and "giving" in me.

Amen

A Jewish Blessing for First-Time Experiences

Blessed are You, Eternal One our God, Universal Presence,
Who keeps us in Life always,
Who supports the unfolding of our uniqueness,
and Who brings us to this very moment for blessing.

Prayer for a Shaky Day

On those mornings that are off kilter,
after nights when I haven't slept.
I look for You and ask You to be near me, gracious God.

On those days when my muscles and mind
feel too tight, cramped and tired to carry me on,
Soothe my soul, Divine One,
give me patience and perspective.

Show me God, that I can find rest in pockets of time,
even as I move through the day you have given.
As I watch the sun travel across the sky
remind me that by day's end
I too will arrive at the place you want me to be.

Amen.

A Prayer for Healing

God our Mother,
Living Water,
Rivers of Mercy,
Source of Life,
in whom we live
and move
and have our being,
who quenches our thirst,
refreshes our weariness,
bathes
and washes
and cleanses
our wounds,
be for us always
a fountain of life,
and for all the world
a river of hope
springing up in the midst
of the deserts of despair.
Honor and blessing,
glory and praise
to you forever.

Amen.

Lead us from death to life,
from falsehood to truth,
Lead us from despair to hope,
from fear to trust.
Let peace fill our hearts,
our world, our universe.
Let us dream together,
pray together,
work together,
to build one world
of peace and justice for all.

May the atmosphere we breathe
breathe fearlessness into us:
fearlessness on earth
and fearlessness in heaven!
May fearlessness guard us
behind and before!
May fearlessness surround us
above and below!
May we be without fear
of friend and foe!
May we be without fear by night and day!
Let all the world be my friend!

          -- Atharva Veda XIX, 15

May the God of Summer
be with you,
enveloping you with the warmth of love,
filling your heart with the brilliance of light,
refreshing you and cooling you in the shade
of God's guiding, protective presence.
And may your deepened experience of this presence
draw others to God's warm, refreshing love.

May the blessings of Summer be with you.

Dear Lindsay,
Thank you for the prayers. I often cry when I pray, or at least I did today.
Do others have similar experiences?
Joan

Dear Joan,

I have definitely cried when I pray sometimes.  It sounds like you are getting in touch with some very profound and deep feelings.

I have had a wonderful time over the years as part of several different prayer groups.  It can be quite reassuring and enlightening to pray with others.

Blessings,

Lindsay
