Renowned Pianist Sam Viviano Makes Beautiful Music -- with Dystonia

Sam Viviano is a pianist who wows audiences using just one hand. The pianist, teacher, composer, author and artist has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and The Phillips Collection in Washington. He will hold his next recital Tues. Nov. 9 at Dyersburg State Community College in Dyersburg, Tennessee.

The whole story is available at http://www.stategazette.com/story/1678207.html Viviano's performances were praised by The New York Times, the Washington Post and The New Yorker before focal dystonia caused the fingers of his right hand to curl and spasm involuntarily. But Viviano did not give up. In fact, he prevailed.

Currently an associate professor at the University of Memphis, Viviano has composed over 100 pieces for the left hand alone, become a published poet, a pen-and-marker artist, and created a CD of original music.

The event is sponsored by the Dyersburg/Dyer County Arts Council in cooperation with the DSCC music department.
